Millions of people undergo general anesthesia for surgery -- that's a controlled, drug-induced medical coma. It differs somewhat from the barbiturate coma used for critically ill patients, and perhaps doesn't lower cerebral metabolism or oxygen consumption as much, but it's more or less the same thing. They wake up fine with little or no side-effects.
