  • Sure, in fact I like it best when fantasy and sci-fi take place in a culturally and temporally relevant scenario. Unless a reader is able to somehow identify with the characters or the environment they can remain somewhat distant and detached from the plot or purpose of the story. Harry Potter is a good example. The fantasy world coexists with the modern world, unbeknownst to the masses of muggles. The first Underworld movie was a decent example as well. Side note: if you ever get the chance to see the movie Photographing Fairies please do. It is a great blend of fantasy with semi-modern reality, and a truly remarkable story.
  • Sure....Piers Anthony does it all the time...and has made a great living doing it! FANTASY.....lets use spell check or a dictionary eh? <wink>
  • I'm sure it could, you'd just have to be very good at entertwining it with modern society, otherwise it could be difficult to read or understand.
