We haven't fought a war there

Partly those things - the US simply doesn't have many interests in the area. But also there were pre-existing colonial powers who though of Africa as "their patch".

There is oil in Africa, lots of it. But, there's almost no oil in Europe or Asia. So, it's not just an oil issue. Also, the US wants to setup a base in Africa, but so far only one nation (Liberia) has offered. Liberia is still in major rebuilding mode, so the US has so far not acted on that invitation. There is a geopolitical strategic reason for every military base, including economic (e.g. oil), security, threat, foreign government interest, etc. The US has historically had few economic, security, or threat reasons to have a base in Africa. Africa has recently become more important because China has become extremely active there, as well as the problem with terrorists taking advantage of the poverty and instability to establish training camps there.

As you have stated, money and power, most of us in the Western Block are guilty of this.

We need all these bases in Africa to protect what? To do what? Once the Africans do something important... anything at all... then we might have a reason to protect our interests there.
-
There's nothing in Africa worth fighting over. As soon as one group of Africans makes something worthwhile, another group of Africans will decide it belongs to them, and will end up destroying it in an effort to deny the original Africans their new resource. African Corruption is a whole new level of selfishness.

The US doesn't care about anything in Africa. It's not like you can expect a country to spend money to have a military presence in a certain place for no reason. There is oil in Africa though. Libya has a shitload of it.
