  • All the advertising that is on the sight. I reckon they're raking it in! EDIT: I just read the question again, I thought you meant how does AB make money?
  • Google gets its money from two sources: the advertising on its pages, and from running specialised search engines on behalf of other companies. Last I heard, the income was about half and half, thought the click through advertising was increasing faster. In the last quarter of 2006, they made $3.2 billion gross revenue, much of it from those ads. You can see their financial statement here: http://investor.google.com/releases/2006Q4.html and you will find more if you dig around that sub-site.
  • I don't know if this answers your question, but not every web site is in the business of making money directly from visits to the site. There are many extremes. Some folks make web sites just to share information - they make no money from the site itself. But their eventual notoriety may earn them money publishing a book, speaking at engagements or selling products and services. Other folks simply use their web site as a form of advertising for the products and services they already sell. So for them, the site is just another promotional expense - albeit a good one. As far as I know, advertising is the only real instant cash cow from web visits.
