If a 5% solution of sodium chlorite is added to distilled water and allowed to sit for a few minutes, what is the chemical reaction, and is it safe to ingest?

    No - unless its in VERY minute amounts.
    Sodium Chlorite is bleach. You will get very sick!

    On the other hand they use this to sanitise drinking water so in VERY small amounts its harmless.
