Why do elephants have flat feet?

Elephants' feet and legs are designed to support their huge size and weight. They are not designed for speed, so ankle joints as other mammals have are not necessary, and ankles would not be good in supporting their weight. Hippos have the same kind of feet as elephants. So did many dinosaurs.
