I received a T-mobile Sidekick from a friend w/o a SIM card. can i purchase a SIM card from T-Mobile?

Yes you can. Just put the sim-card into the side-kick (under the flap near the shoulder buttons), and off you go! Be warned, the instant messaging feature on the Sidekick costs a bomb. (When I was testing the Sidekick they charged per IM you sent.) T-mobile internet access, however, is the cheapest around. They currently have a maximum cap-off at £1 each day. In comparison other networks charge over £5 per Mb. [This answer is correct as I write it. Price plans change with time.]

Yes, you can buy a stand alone SIM card to use in any phone as long as it's compatible with the network. Check out the plan costs though - IIRC Sidekick data plans are expensive compared to other T-Mobile offerings. The Sidekicks are very specialized for messaging applications. It's very good at what it's designed for but if it's not the right fit there may be cheaper options.
