  • No, I think that statement confuses two things that are quite distinct. The point is not that "goodness only exists with evil", it's that the *idea* of good naturally is defined in relation to it's opposite (evil). This is called "dualism", and it occurs with many, many ideas. For example, "up" is related to "down" -- you cannot define 'up' without somehow hinting at the existence of 'down' -- otherwise, your definition of the word would not make any sense: 'up' needs 'down' to push against... something to be different than. When you throw a ball up in the air, the ground moves down relative to the ball. We don't normally think like that, because it's counter-intuitive, but it's still true. Likewise, if you do good, the evil in the world becomes a bit more evil by contrast. It doesn't mean your good actions weren't good or were worthless. Now, in your question you say "always relative and not subjective" -- but these are two very different concepts. "Relative" is inescapable: everything is defined relative to something else, there's no getting around that. "Subjective" means "cannot be objectively established", i.e. something that an individual judges for themselves which may have no correlation to the rest of reality. But that's not the case with good and evil -- certainly there is plenty of correlation, many ways to establish goodness or evilness that do not depend on an individual opinion.
  • the existence of good and evil is relative. You would not know if something is good if you have nothing to compare it too. They are in essence the flip side of a coin.
  • I disagree with the thought that goodness does not exist without evil. I understand evil to be a lack of goodness, in the same manner that darkness is a lack of light, and cold a lack of heat. The subjective part of "good" is a different matter though. Without an external moral standard of "goodness", not only is it subjective, but I'd say further that it doesn't exist in it's own right. Whether or not there is an external moral standard is a matter of faith and opinion. +5
  • Is there something like Goodness? Goodness is the term we use to pat ourselves in the back and allow ourselves some 'halo' time. True goodness is without a selfish motive and I have yet to see it. Maybe then it will be absolute and not relative.
