From about age 12 my mother took us to see live show musicals.
I'm not sure whether the first was "Show Boat" or "The Black and White Minstrel Show".
But the 2 best stage musicals we ever saw were 'Carousel' and 'The Sound of Music'.
On film, I reckon the best was the 'Sound of Music' - even though my favourite male singer is actually Gordon McCrae, the 'Music' was the better production for film.

My first was West Side Story. It was here at TPAC in Nashville, and it sucked so bad. I love the musical though. It's just that this particular cast wasn't great.

1776 in 1967 for the bicentennial. It starred Howard Da Silva as the irrascible Ben Franklin. He also played in the film version. It is still a favorite of mine.

The first live musical I ever saw was The Fantastics performed by my local high school as the senior class play. I was eight years old and can still remember some of the songs. The first professional production of a musical I ever saw was The Sound of Music at the South Shore Music Circus. I was ten, and I remember being scared out of my wits when the SS came to arrest Herr Von Trapp.

I'll pretend it was Dreamgirls. I think I saw Chorus Line and Evita before that; I didn't get Evita, and Chorus Line, I don't know what happened there but didn't blow me away. But I was a little older, still a teen, and got TCKTS for Dreamgirls and thought the shows a year old, probably not that good. I didn't know how the musical had changed into its mostly-song fast-moving, kinda cinamatic modern form, and it knocked me outta my seat! By intermission I truly did not know what hit me. I was stunned. Laughed, cried, chills. And I got it. I understood the power of the musical. I was also stunned and surprised by Kiss Me Kate years later.
