Is passing AIDS by a pregnant mother who is unaware of her HIV status to an unborn child a human rights violation?

Well, no, Suby...and you know better than that, I know. It is a tragedy, for sure,..for both mother and child. Suby, I feel deeply for people in this situation, but what can we do? We have tried everything...education, condoms, all the medicines we have...We can't stop it. We cannot change human behavior. And with all the education, it is like these people still have no idea what the disease is or how it is transmitted....If they do know, it is like, "Well, c'est la vie, que sera sera,...whatever will be will be". What is it in these peoples' religion/philosophy that makes them think they have no control over their own lives? I am at a loss....Is it tribal, Islam? What is it?

I'm divided. I think that if the pregnancy was accidental, and the mother did not know she had HIV, then no, it's not a human rights violation. However, if the woman planned the pregnancy, but couldn't be bothered taking herself down to the doctor's for a HIV check first (something I think is just common sense), and then she unknowingly passes HIV on to her baby, then yes, this might just be a human rights violation. The woman's carelessness and indifference caused her baby to contract HIV.

I don't know my friend but if she is unaware of it that should be a mitigating circumstance. The ones who should be nailed are the drug addicts who give birth to drug-addicted children and the alcoholics whose children suffer for life from fetal alcohol syndrome. They were in charge of their actions. They knew better. They are the criminals. :)

I think it is a human rights violation. I also think that any communicable disease to include hepatitis, HIV, AIDS, should also be made known to the public. Swine flu is reported but not HIV? I worked in a mental facility and one of the patients had HIV. He USED it against patients and staff. I was glad I found out by rumor, then his chart or I may have it today. My life for this sociopath? +5
