Help answer this question below.
It is impossible to describe Spain as one ethnicity, just like it is impossible to describe any nation as one ethnicity.
Latinos are from the South American countries.
The main ethnic group in Spain is Caucasian. The 2008 CIA Factbook gives a racial description of "composite of Mediterranean and Nordic types." Both Nordics and Mediterraneans are considered Caucasians. Remember that not all Caucasians have the same coloring.
It also has a large Gitano (Spanish Gypsy) population and small amount of Hungaros (a later Rroma immigration). Gitanos and Hungaros are dark skinned and can look Latino. I know that I am often mistaken for Native American or Latino.
Spain is also the normal national hodgepodge of ethnicities with people from all over.
The Spanish are Europeans...caucasians..just like Italians..Portugese..French.
The People of Spain are not latinos...latinos are from LATIN america. They are considered european and europeans are for the most part are caucasian.
Spain was invaded by the Moors of North Africa hundreds of years ago. Some of those people stayed and that's why many spaniards appear latino. And there are millions of caucasians too.
Latinos are from Latin America. I don't think people from Spain are considered caucasian because I've seen both light and dark skinned Spanish people. I just called them Spanish.
I was born in Spain. I am from Spain & I consider myself Spanish.
these two categories are not mutually exclusive. latino is anyone who is a native speaker of a language descended from the western branch of latin: the french, italians, portuguese, brazilians, spanish, etc. are all latino. the royal spanish academy's definition of latino is: "Natural de los pueblos de Europa y América en que se hablan lenguas derivadas del latín." basically what i said, in case you don't speak spanish.
latino is a wide language umbrella like semite or celt (for comparison), each of which also incorporates many languages.
hispanic is more specific. hispanic is a speaker of castilian spanish which excludes native speakers of galician, asturian, catalan, and other spanish languages. hispanics, like latinoes, come in all racial types. arab is homologous in that it's a subcategory of semite and is about what you speak and not about what you look like or where you live.
caucasian is racial category (stuck somewhere between social science and hard science), but it has nothing to do with the language you speak or where you're from. it has more to do with what you look like.
so almost all people from spain are latinoes (the basques aren't), most are hispanic and even more are caucasian.
hope that helps
Just call them Spanish and you won't offend anyone.
caucasians
