  • Just learn English; that is the language of this country.
  • What? No quires Espanol?
  • Absolutely, but hte question that comes to mind is Why? If this is a problem for you master the other 6,911 and work for the CIA.
  • Adding languages costs money, creates greater inconvenience to the majority language speakers, adds confusion to the law system, etc. You have the right to learn and use any language you want, though. No one's stopping you there. It's just that for official use, English is the standard in the U.S.
  • Because Spanish is the only one with enough speakers that equal, or nearly equal, treatment is a plausible option. It is not the language which has rights, it is the speakers of the language, humans, who have rights. No-one would expect the USA to provide equal treatment for languages with no, or only a handful, of speakers. But one whose native speakers, arguably, are more than half as may as those who are native English speakers has a good case for equal rights treatment. It is people that have rights, not abstractions like language. It is merely sloppy use of (the English) language when people demand rights for Spanish rather than Spanish Speakers.
  • The official language of USA is english, period. In Canada, for example, french is an official language and a citizen ostensibly has the right to communicate with a federal agency, anywhere in the country, in the citizen's choice of french or english. Spanish is only a de facto lingua franca in USA. There is a degree of bilingualism in some federal literature only as a courtesy and convenience to spanish speakers, who constitute the fifth largest spanish speaking country in the world http://www.answerbag.com/q_view/525042 . In the event that some clear majority in Puerto Rico opted for statehood, they would have to accept english as the official language, as did Hawaii. In some areas, it is spoken as a matter of drawing more business. If you have a love of languages then you are free to learn another, but in this part of the world your opportunities to practice it could be limited.
  • I don't understand what you mean -- your only option for what?
