  • Yes by giving them a firmish tap around the nose area.
  • Just to clarify so that I don't get yelled at-- I NEVER EVER hit my dog, but I know that some people think that it's okay.
  • never that is just mean!!! treat your dog with respect and be nice!!!! the nicer you are the eiser that it will be.
  • You should never, ever hit a dog. That only causes emotional trauma, not to mention physical trauma. Dogs are naturally sensitive to your desires and will respond much better with a firm tone of voice. Ask a dog trainer or someone who has a lot of healthy experience with a dog.
  • No...definitely not...positive re-enforcement with food is the best way...
  • Sure it can help, it's also wrong and shouldn't be done. It's like a child, really.
  • No. No. No. Hitting a dog will do nothing more than hurt it and instill fear. It will not connect being hit with whatever it is the person perceives it has done wrong. I think people who abuse (and hitting is abuse) animals and people who abuse children share many traits. Dishing out violence on the vulnerable and defenceless is the lowest of low.
  • As you have read, hitting a pet never accomplishes anything except to make that pet either timid, shy and scared or fierce, mean and dangerous. I will mention though that I am pleased you asked for advice on this subject instead of going ahead without any knowledge. Good for you.
  • NO !!! Dogs will react better with a stern "NO" when the misbehave or even a LIGHT swat with a newspaper ... However; "Good dog" etc and pats on the head and even a treat should be given when a dog does as instructed .... +5
  • Never. A stern "no" will achieve better results. Hitting the dog will make him/her timid and possibly instill the desire to bite. The most important thing is to give praise for positive actions.
  • No its only going to make him scard of you. I hate to see hitting. Your words are good enough.
