This one is great: His Promised Land: The Autobiography of John P. Parker, Former Slave and Conductor on the Underground Railroad
-
I haven't read it, but my friend would suggest Nelson Mandela. Not sure if its an autobiography or just a biography, but an inspiring story of him and his dream never dying.
-
This might not be to your liking, but I recommend "Who's afraid of a Large Black Man" by Charles Barkley. It's poignant, serious, and funny (as Sir Charles always is ! ) For a biography, I recommend "Lincoln's Melancholy" - amazing stuff in there. Most people don't know the severe depressions Lincoln struggled with all his life and how they worsened while he was our president.
-
Try Lance Armstrong's "It's Not About the Bike" (i think that's the title)

Scar Tissue by Anthony Kiedis of the red hot chili peppers. it was a really good autobiography A Million Little Pieces by James Frey, about him in rehab, another really good book. Tommyland by Tommy Lee of motley crue, another really good book

I enjoyed the one authorized by Rock Hudson about how he lived his life as a lie in Hollywood. He granted the author interviews about his life during the last weeks before his death, from AIDs. Sad, but very interesting.
-
Paula Deen wrote one. (she's the butter-lovin' southern lady from Food Network.) even if you've never watched her shows or heard about her, it's a page-turner.
-
The Nazi Officer's Wife by Edith Hahn Beer http://www.bbc.co.uk/worldservice/people/highlights/edith.shtml
-
It's not exactly an autobiography but Akio Morita's Made in Japan about Sony and himself are very interesting readings.

I'm quite enjoying "Stand & Deliver: The Autobiography by Adam Ant" but then I'm a fan of his stuff from long back, whereas most people may have only heard his sugar-pop stuff like "Goody Two Shoes". He describes how he invented this alter-ego of his and the path of sex, cutting, and mental illness that followed until he was formally diagnosed with Bipolar disorder. It's very real, quite raw, and very excuse-free. High on humility and low on arrogance: what a punk/rock/pop star bio should be.
