because the media has no idea about beauty.
-
Because that's what they interpret beauty in their sense. Woman I think are beautiful just the way they are.
-
Because a lot of clothes look much better on a hanger, so they find models built like one.
-
i personally like something to hold onto *wink*

To make normal women feel so inadequate that they can't achieve an ideal of beauty that they spend a fortune on things to make them feel better about their appearance, from spot cream to a boob job. This makes advertisers and health and beauty corporations rich and allows men to rule the world while the women are busy feeling inadequate and drinking slimfast.
-
The media skews the concept of what is normal across its entire spectrum. I suspect that the high prevalence of bolemia and anorexia in America today is due to the negative effect the media has on the self image of many completely normal young women.

Can I just say something? Just because a person is curvy, does not make them unattractive or any less beautiful than anyone else. But also skinny people are beautiful too. I hate the fact that people feel they can say nasty things about people who are skinny. I am skinny, and treat everyone with respect and regard beauty as something being both inner and outer. I get cruel comments all the time, which does not help. I am real, this is the real world, and I look anorexic. I can't help it. Nor can a few friends of mine. So can we please be nice about both?

I read a theory (THIS IS NOT MY OPINION, JUST WHAT I READ) that said that since many of the original top designers were gay, they actually cariactured women deliberately with their designs. JUST WHAT I READ, GUYS. DON'T ATTACK ME. IT WAS WRITTEN IN A MAG I READ.
-
Because it is the westerners generalization of what beauty is. While alot of men find beauty in a curvy woman others do not and it is the others we have to thank for this idealization.
-
the point of magazines isn't to mirror reality, it is to sell copies (and ad space of course)!
-
They think that skinny is pretty. But actually, most women in the magazines weight less than an average women and are skinnier than an average women.
-
actually i keep tryin to spread the word too in person and on here...u should see how many body image questions i have put my 2 cents worth in =P well at least there is two of us...hopefully more =oD

Wall Street hype. May it die a quick death!
-
Quite simply, to make women feel like crap and spend their money...they look at a mag with a skinny airbrushed model, look at themselves thinking 'im so fat and ugly', next they see an ad for diet pills and botox, before you know it they're swiping their credit cards for this bullshit.
-
Because that's what the big companies want us to think is "beautiful". They use skinny women to promote "the business of looking good with distorted images of women". Reality doesn't sell products for them. I personally like a woman who has a little fat on her, with curves, not a woman who looks and feels like a washing board!
-
To make women change themselves because they all buy into it. Women are just at war with other women, it's a downward spiral of jealousy and contempt. That's not what real men like though, we like our women to look like women, not dolls or 9 year old girls.
-
It's your opinion. I don't think all women in the magazines are stick figured, most of them have the natural curves. Though, most of them are a weight the average person isn't and will likely never be. People shouldn't let what is in magazines affect them. Seriously, some of the things they wear even that is considered stylish, I think is disgusting. It's an opinion, it's meant for entertainment. Really, not something to be taken more than with a grain of salt.

Just so all the ladies know, men dont all like really skinny women. Me personally i dont and i dont know why so many men desire them. I like a girl who isnt just skin and bones. I dont want a girl whos fat either just one who actually has an ass and boobs

Thin sells.

Women subsisting on cocaine and cigarettes with the occasional croissant thrown is not healthy. This is what many models do. What a hellish life it must be to have to maintain an unnatural weight. Can you imagine starving and being dizzy all of the time, having no strength to enjoy life? It's good they make a boatload of money for they will need it for plastic surgery to reverse rapid aging and God knows what kind of health problems. I'd rather be 30 pounds overweight and healthy. The 30 pounds is disappearing but I occasionally give up on dieting and just continue eating healthy and working out. Psychological health means something, too. I guess thin sells like everyone else said.

Beauty/fashion magazines are designed to make women feel ugly so they will eat. That is why they sell them in grocery stores.
