The first time I flew into LA in about 1973...I saw a hillside on one side of the plane with part of the Hollywood sign showing, what I knew was a valley with a blanket of smog so thick nothing beneath it showed through the haze and through the widow on the other side of the plane something that looked vaguely like another hillside.
