It's an issue of time constraint to deal with a problem. Non-violent is naturally better if you have the time. ("I think White Snake rocked!" "Die, Pig!") But if there isn't time... if the idea you want to combat is that the guy with the knife in front of you thinks you need to die now... then you do what you have to.

the wonderful thing about force - force will get you nowhere, except where you want to go. seriously, an idea spread without force has a better chance of becoming widespread.

well, it depends on what you mean by better. if you eliminate your opposition it would be pretty easy to advance an idea, however, you can't just around killing everyone who doesn't agree with your idea.

How would YOU feel about the idea of my killing YOU to further my own agenda? My guess is you would be somewhat less than thrilled at the prospect. Given that a stable, civilized society maintains that status by people not simply randomly killing other members of the society for their own purposes, nonviolence seems the logical choice. There is always this way of saying it: "One World War II Quaker conscientious objector had been a professional wrestler. Once when he and some other inmates of the Coshocton CPS camp in Ohio made a trip into town, they were hassled about their pacifism by some local youths, who insisted that only force could change the German's views. In response, the ex-wrestler took off his coat, challenged one of the local boys to a match, and promptly threw the townie across the room. He then asked the youth, "Now do you believe that force won't change people's views?" "Heck no!" the local boy hollered back. "That's exactly my point," said the Quaker, who put on his coat and left." Quakers Are Funny! by Chuck Fager, Kimo Press, 1987

Depends upon what you're aiming at: If you want to advance something ethically- nonviolence. But if you don't care about ethics- remember that martyrs make good rallying points.
