Silence of the Lambs, Texas Chainsaw Masacre and Psycho all derived from Ed Gein. Then there was Son of Sam (if you count that as a horror movie).

The Texas Chainsaw Massacre film is a fictional story but based loosely on the life of Wisconsin serial killer Ed Gein.

The antics of Ed Gein were also the inspiration behind the books and subsequent film Amityville Horror and Psycho.

The killer Buffalo Bill in Silence of The Lambs is mainly a combination of 3 real life serial killers, one of which was the already mentioned Ed Gein, along with Ted Bundy and one other that I can't remember (the special edition Criterion DVD, that is now out of print, has an audio commentary that has a member of the FBI talking about the real killers that the character Buffalo Bill was based on).

So although many horror films take their inspiration from many real life people/events, many of the film stories are still fake/not true.

The Entity is based on the story of Carla Moran, who was said to have been plagued by a violent poltergeist/ghost.

The first Amityville-movie was loosely based on the happenings in the Amityville-House.

Edward Gein, the Ghoul of Plainfield pretty much influenced the entire slasher genre, beginning with Psycho and followed up by The Texas Chainsaw Massacre. A lot of horror is based from "true stories" such as The Amityville series, The Exorcist, The Blair Witch Project and several nasty cannibal oriented films from the seventies.

However, to say that most of these are based from true stories in incredibly light, because they take one significant and true element, and grossly mutate it into something that doesn't resemble the true event on which it was based from, whatsoever.

"Based from a true story" sells, but in most cases, this isn't the truth more than it is fantastic elaboration transitioned to a totally different concept.

Though I find it amusing how gullible people are, to think that the opening and ending evidence footage of The Texas Chainsaw Massacre (2004 remake.) or the filmed events of The Blair Witch Project are real actual footage for example-if it was, they wouldn't be allowed to show it for entertainment. :/

The story of Ed Gein has formed the basis of several Horror Films.

The actual story was the basis of:
    "Deranged" (1974)
"Ed Gein" (aka "In the Light of the Moon") (2000)
"Ed Gein: The Butcher of Plainfield" (2007)

Furthermore, the character of Ed Gein was adapted for the movies:
    "Psycho" (1960) (Norman Bates)
"The Texas Chainsaw Massacre" (1974) (Leatherface)
"Silence of the Lambs" (1991) (Buffalo Bill)

    Hope this helps.

The Exorcist. A boy was supposedly possessed. He lived in Georgetown, Washington, DC. Apparently, the boy threw the priest out of a second or third floor window.

I don't know if any of the above is true but I remember reading about it, which doesn't prove a thing of course.

Now, I have to go and research.

Has anyone else heard this version?
