How do you know when something is your "favorite"?

When you willingly choose it above all other viable options. But that raises the issue of having to try *Every* other option. So I avoid overusing the word favourite, I prefer to just take the entirely truthful route and say something more along the lines of "The one that I prefer out of all the alternatives I've tried so far."

I don't know if people actually have absolute favorites. I think it's more like something that you like best 'at this moment'. You will say "oh, that's my favorite song" or "my favorite flavor is this" but then next week you'll say the same thing about something else. So I think it's just things we really like now.
