How come Mexicans insist on putting their used toilet paper in the garbage can instead of flushing it?

Do you know that for a fact, or are you being facetious? Perhaps their plumbing cannot handle the paper. At least it is not like some remote spots in third world countries where are no toilets and people go wherever they can.

I'm not exactly sure why they do that. I have been to Mexico and I too wondered why that was. I think it might have to do with the plumbing there.

The septic system in old Mexico cannot handle the paper due to several factors explained in this website. Repairs can be very expensive. http://www.yucatanliving.com/yucatan-survivor/mexican-fosa-septica.htm We noted such warnings in Merida, Yucatan hotel during a vacation many years ago.

I work in a large factory that employs many Mexicans and it is a fact, they will put a box in the stall to collect used toilet paper, (or else throw it on the floor beside the commode). I'm told it has to do with the lack of adequate plumbing where they were raised and for some as a recycling measure as well. Think about it folks there was a time not too long ago that many of us had outhouses and put good use to old newspapers and catalogs!

The majority of hispanics have never used or dealt with a commode, they are not commonplace in mexico. At least this is what i remember seeing on my last visit to mexico. their commodes are open pits, where they just bend and squat.

OMG! I am living in "Border Country" and EVERY restroom I have been in in the last 6 month reaks of poop and urine! There are signs on the bathrooms stalls asking to "Please flush toilet paper in the toilet"! NASTY! I am disgusted to use public restrooms, especially with my 2 small children. It makes me sick, I try not to use a restroom in a restaurant to aviod leaving in disgust! If they let their bathrooms get that nasty, what do the kitchens look like?! PLEASE, PLEASE, you are in the United States now....our sewers can HANDLE YOUR CRAP! FLUSH IT! FLUSH IT! FLUSH IT!
