I always buy the hardcover. If it is only in paperback, I'll get that, but only then.

Cheaper and lighter. I read on the move in buses, trains, and planes.

Paperbacks are easier to read but are more disposable. Hardbacks look better on shelves and last longer.

Two reasons: they are cheaper, and they lighter to put in my bag and carry with me. I do prefer hardbacks, but I will never choose one over paperback unless I just can't wait for it to be published in paperback.

They fit in my jacket pocket. It lets me always have a book with me if I'm stuck somewhere waiting.

easier to stick in my purse and easier to hold when I am laying down to read

I usually read best sellers and do not want to wait a year for the paperback. Also the print is larger in a hardcover.

Because I like to read in bed and when I fall asleep and drop the book on my face (a) it often does not wake me up and (b) it doesn't hurt like a hard back.

availability. its there on the counter or in the rack. paperback is easier to abuse. thats the best reason.
