The Mayan calendar was cyclical. 2012 didn't represent the end of the world, just the end of their ability to count. It would just start again at the year one.

Yes,Nostradamus has also made mention of the 2012 'apocalypse'(Dec 21,the winter solstice)it is the alignment of all the planets in our solar system with each other as well as the sun with the center of the (supposed)13th zodiac sign(don't remember the name of that one),apparently it is in the center of the zodiac's and is the center of something specific in the night sky.
