  • I'm not entirely sure there's any way to be "always" in compliance with the law, with so many things changing so rapidly. I get information from several sources. Our payroll processing service often sends out information, as does our workers comp carrier. But the best source is to subscribe to one of the newsletters that specializes in keeping HR professionals up to date on employment law. Try to find one that also covers your state laws. You can also check for any HR organizations in your area and see what publications they recommend. You might even want to join such a group. Also, contact your state bureau and see if they have any kind of suggestions for keeping up with the laws. One of the things I do is keep files of all my notes and publications. My understanding is that if you demonstrate that you make an effort to stay in compliance, unintentional oversites discovered during an audit are less likely to become big deals. In terms of exposure to employee or ex-employee lawsuits, the best thing is to have an excellent employee manual that is regularly reviewed by an attorney specializing in employment law.
  • Work with the best vendors possible. Create this expectation in the minds of your vendors. Subscribe to high quality publications or sites, such as BLR. Do annual audits.
