  • in the usa, one advertises in the paper the prominent stuff for sale. the furniture, television, stamp collection, playboy magazines. then one puts out some arrows for local directions. then one opens at seven am and closes at two pm. yard sailors peruse the paper and visit the ones that advertise stuff they want. lots of people buy the stuff and resell it later for more. staff is important. security is important. people can walk off with out paying if someone is busy with another person.

  • a license without one the police will ticket you for selling YOUR property on YOUR property, and they will trespass on YOUR property to give you that ticket. isn't america wonderful
  • Check long range weather forecasts and schedule it for a weekend that is expected to be rain-free. Put out hand made signs on flourescent colored paper with solid black marker words clearly stating the address at strategic street corners. Place an ad in craigslist under ForSale>Garage Sales, 3,2, and 1 day in advance. It costs nothing in most markets, and yields a boatload of traffic. Lay everything out early, and spread out so it is easy to pick through. Lastly, for anything that you 'price' be realistic. It is a garage sale, the intent being to move stuff unwanted out, not to get rich. 20% or less, of the original value, is a good rule of thumb. Keep an attendant out there. Many people will not stop if the 'sale' is unattended. Smile and say hello to people.
  • Check the weather reports, go to the bank on Friday and get some cash in small bills and change. Then take a good, long look at your crap. Then post nice signs at major roads, directing people to your sale. And then SELL!
  • After many years of having a garage or yard sale, the following has always worked for us.......... First, the weather is the main factor. losy weather means a losy garage sale. some people will venture out in the rain and cold, but most people will not. try to plan your sale on a nice day. watch the weather forecast for your area. Second, is display. borrow tables if you have to, but do not lay items on the floor or ground. shoppers figure that if the item is on the floor, then it must be junk. displaying your items is like food on a plate at a restaurant. appeal is everything and everything for a successful sale for you. Third, be ready to negotiate a sale on everything. it takes a little time to mark a price on each item, but it gives you an immediate number to bargain with, once your sale is in full swing with lots of customers. Fourth, have enough money on hand at the beginning, in order to make change. this sometimes runs a good customer away. we start with a hundred dollars broken down in several ones and lots of change. the bank will do this for you. Fifth, plan ahead for placement of your sale signs. make the signs legible and easy to see from an automobile. most people write down the addresses from inside their car. make signs out a sturdy material that will not fall flat, if it rains. Sixth, and definetely not the least. clean up after yourself. remove outdated sale signs and leave the area and your yard or garage in the condition it was in before your sale. Seventh, count your money. Have a successful sale and wear a smile. people will accept you and your sale much faster if you are smiling.
