I think every forty years or so should be often enough.

It's a personal choice. If your carpets are beyond cleaning and very worn it would be a good idea. If you have destructive children and pets I would wait.

The average life span of carpets is 10 years. They can and should last a lot longer as long as you take care of them ie vacuuming, professional cleaning etc.
