There are good arguments on both sides, but I think on balance smoking and growing small amounts should be legalized. Here's the arguments I think are most compelling: Pro: - Marijuana is relatively harmless compared to (for example) alcohol and tobacco - We value individual freedom, and restrict it only when there are compelling reasons to do so. The reasons for restricting marijuana aren't very compelling - There is a high cost to society for suppression efforts, ranging from local law enforcement wasting its time to massive violence along the Mexican border (and deep into Mexico) resulting in large part from marijuana trade - The legal traffic could be taxed and regulated much more easily, as cigarettes and alcohol are done. Con: - Marijuana impairs judgment, and can contribute to developmental delays in young people - Drivers who are high are a danger to others - We find the notion of someone getting high (or drunk) morally unsettling. ..... So, on balance, I think the arguments favor legalization.
