  • it depends what kind of music you're playing. For rock and metal, I'll mostly play a complex beat with more than my fair share of fill, maybe through in a weird meter or two. For jazz or latin, I like to take whatever tune we're playing and transfer it to drums- it's amazing how much the crowd enjoys hearing the drums quote the melody to 'Tenor Madness'. My only problem with most drum solos is that they don't go anywhere. Start with something simple and add things and make it more intricate and complex. Keep a theme throughout and it goes from being a mediocre solo to actual music. It's cool.
