It may be old hat now, but my mother used to give a Better Homes and Gardens cookbook and a rolling pin as wedding present for all newly weds. She said the Cookbook was so they would have something to eat and the rolling pin was so the bride could make the groom cook it.

Rachel Ray is good for the beginner.

I am not sure if it is made anymore but "The Good Housekeeping Cookbook" is great.
