They can...and have. Dogs have been killed by cougars in the woods. A cougar mother with cub or cubs is a very dangerous animal to be around. She will kill anything perceived as a threat. People have been attacked and killed just for being near a cougar mother's lair without knowing. Males are reclusive, but can also be dangerous during mating season in their "territory"... or simply when hungry.

Yes. To a cougar, any pet is easy prey. This happens around homes that border on the wilderness. Not only cougars but coyotes and even raccoons eat pets.
