Coward. I loved his writing and actually met the man. I revered him until he blew his brains out. He hurt a lot of people he said he loved and left his blood soaked corpse for his family to find. Not cool even for him.

Besides my other answer, I also think of an American Infantry soldier stationed in Iraq named Colby Buzzell. I used to read his blog and he was a huge Thompson fan and through his blog I got to know Hunter S. Thompson myself. Colby was a gifted writer himself and went on to write his own book based on his blog. it's call My War. It doesn't read like a book, it's just a collection from his blog - which he eventually chose to shut down after the army discovered who he was and started censoring him. I was addicted to his blog and sometimes would get up in the middle of the night just to see if he posted anything new. He's pretty apolitical. Just a regular soldier describing his life in Iraq (and some hellish firefights). We really don't know what these guys are going through. So Colby educated me (and his thousands of other fans) on Hunter S. Thompson and many other great writers who I would have never discovered. Thanks Colby!

"We had two bags of grass, seventy-five pellets of mescaline, five sheets of high-powered blotter acid, a saltshaker half-full of cocaine and a whole multicolored collection of uppers, downers, laughers, screamers . . . Also, a quart of tequila, a quart of rum, a case of beer, a pint of raw ether and two dozen amyls. Not that we needed all that for the trip, but once you get into a serious drug collection, the tendency is to push it as far as you can."
