you don't have to use HOT water ... use cold ... may want to try a fabric softener in the washer and dryer

Regular laundering might not be "powerful enough" to kill the odors in the fabric. I suggest BOILING the towels, and see if that doesn't destroy the bacteria that may be embedded in the fabric fibers, which is, in turn, creating the odor that is bothering you. If you think that boiling the towels is a bad idea, keep in mind that that is EXACTLY what is done to towels and bedsheets in a hospital, to prevent the possibility of "cross-contamination" from highly contagious patients in the isolation wards. +5

my grandma said to use bakeing soda and borax with your normal laundry soap then hang in the sun to dry sun kills bacteria

Use a cup of vinegar in the last rinse of your laundry (all of it) to sanitize.

If you wash daily with a good detergent they would not smell stale. What kind of liquid do they get dipped into? Maybe you should trash them and get fresh ones.

One of the reasons dish cloths and wash cloths smell is because they are left to sit when they are still wet. Make sure you squeeze the discloths as much as you can when you finish using them and spread it out so it can dry with circulating air.
