The question mark is a literary convention used to signify when a question is being asked. And you are asking two questions, really. 1. "Why is there a question mark at the end of this question?" Answer: To signify that you are indeed asking a question. and... 2. "What is this question asking? Answer: The question is asking why there is a question mark at the end of the question and what the question is asking about.
