Universities are normally 4 years ,much larger and for the whole state. Community colleges are normally 2 years, smaller, and for certain sections (maybe they will understand counties) of the state.

After finishing the required 12 years of education, a person has an option to go on to "higher" education. A community college is a state sponsored school which offers certificates of technical proficiency in certain subjects and Associates Degrees (a 2 year course of study). Community Colleges typically do not require an entrance exam and are frequently attended by people of all ages. It is commonly used as a stepping-stone into a 4 year college or university where high school grades were not suficient to gain enterance or when tuition is an issue (community college costs less money and the credits earned may be transferred to the University level). A four year college or university may be state sponsored or private and requires a minimum high school grade point average or qualifying score on an SAT exam as well as an enterance application. The first two years are typically about the same courses a student would take at a community college, with the remaining two years being focued on a specific concentration or "major". The college/university degree carries more weight than an Associates degree from a community college but is more expensive.
