There are many variables. Your age, general health, and how much contaminated food you ate are all factors. The most common symptoms are diarrhea, nausea, vomiting, and abdominal pain, but you don't necessarily get all the symptoms. At-risk people can become very ill and can even die from foodborne illness because their immune systems are less able to fight off the bacteria. Yes you can get sick from eating contaminated food. There is food poisoning caused from the infectious germs making toxins from consuming what is in your bowel. You cannot heat the food to get rid of it. It is poison hence food poisoning. There is also food infection caused by a germ(infectious agent) that multiplies and causes symptoms(diarrhea) etc,in some cases you can heat the food to the proper temperature and not contaminant ie:(e-coli). Sometimes not. You can also be infected with a parasite that will live in your bowel from contaminated food. You have normal flora that lives in your bowel and as long as your body (GI)tract stays in harmony it actually is a good thing that helps in digesting your food and producing vitamins you need. Just be safe! Keep food at proper temperature, cook foods at proper temperatures, and make sure the surfaces your prepare food on are clean and disinfected to prevent contamination in the first place. Most of all wash your hands before eating or preparing food. One other thing, if you think you have been infected or poisoned by food DON'T TAKE DIARRHEA MEDICATION! It can make things worse! Seek a doctor's advise immediately.
