You teach 2nd Grade. One of your students writes the answer, "Answers may vary," on a sentence answer for a reading assignment. How do you confront him, and what do you do next?

If the kid knows what "vary" means, s/he gets the points.

First, understand where this child is coming from and why he would ever write this as an answer. He may have been coached to write this answer from a parent or friend, in order to create a problem for you. This child did not learn this answer on its own. After determining all the facts, i would again give this child the same test and make it clear that only a definite answer will be accepted. A parent/teacher conference might also be in order to understand more about the childs family.

Ask him/her why they wrote that answer. Get them an IQ test. They sound like they are too intelligent and creative for 2nd grade.

"Yes Timmy or Jane but why?" Great answer but I need to know why? Why? You remember when you used to ask you mom or dad why? Now I am asking you why?
