I think they were awesome, and I think Paul Simon had a terrific solo career.

More folk than rock I think. And, yeah I guess they were legit. I mean Paul Simon did work with some heavy hitters.

Oh yeah, they're the poster children!

Ah> yeah. Why do you ask. No different than many others from that era. Mama's and Papa's. Shit like that.

We all thought so back in the day. The thing I find interesting though is that the reason I hear given most often for their breakup is that Paul Simon felt that Art Garfunkel was riding his coattails when it came to songwriting and not pulling his weight, and yet for the last two decades of his career, I think Paul Simon did just that when it came to other musicians. Would he have had nearly the career he had without Ladysmith Black Mambazo? Or would There Goes Rhymin' Simon have been a big hit without the Zydeco and Gospel bands that backed him up or contributed inspiration? It isn't that the exposure didn't benefit those bands, but I don't think Paul Simon would have had much of a career without them. And while I know Art Garfunkel benefited from the association, I don't think Paul Simon would have gone far without Garfunkel's soaring harmonies.

I don't know if you could legitimately call them a group. A duo would seem more appropriate. I never thought of them as rock n rollers though. More folk balladeers I would think.
