Mine is right at my front door. I like it that way. If I had to have it on the street it would absolutely have to lock.

My mailbox is inside our security building and locked with a key. I have never had a problem with stolen mail :)

Building. In the UK the mail is put through the door.

Living in the UK not many prople have mail boxes (letter box) away from there house, and i'm sure that if they were they'd only get vandalised.

To answer the question, I would want it on the house, but I have to pick up my mail at the post office.
