I can't tell you an exact time, but even since ancient times they recognized that. They however, couldn't explain the whys and hows.

Excuse me but this was discoverd before Modern man. Unless you are wanting to go prehistoric and then who knows?

I recall an art prof showing slides of the Venus of Willendorf and suggesting that it was a sort of charm for getting babies from a woman. . http://www.artlex.com/ArtLex/s/images/stoneag_willendorf.lg.jpg . I thought it sounded pretty weak. . Primitive man followed animals around to survive. I have little doubt that individual people would have noted features passed on from one animal to another and features passed on from one human to another on occasions where sexual options were restricted. . As to when it became common knowledge I cannot say. I don't believe it is a matter of historical record.
