My son is taking a "Survivors Class" for possibly getting lost in the Mountains. What are some items that you might put in the Small Backpack that would help you survive in the Wilderness?

one of those new very thin foldable thermal blankets that are also water proof and will act as a blanket. very thin very small. knife and matches and maybe a flare gun.

A GPS with a tracking beacon so he could be found. A knife. Matches. Food and water. Readers Digest (to read, use as TP and to start a fire). Cell phone.

I have a Cell Phone, Water Filter, String, Poncho, Snake Bite Kit, Water, Small packages of dried foods, One of those silver emergency blankets, fishing line with hook and lures and bobber, First Aid Kit, socks, Hand and Feet warmer, (they come in a small package and when the air touches them they release heat for 8 hrs)Big Knife, Water Proof matches, Knife sharpner, whistle compass, Folding Pan, Folding shovel, Folding Saw, Pepper Spray, Flint to make the fire with, 8 x 8 tarp, a small handgun. (All in a pretty small backpack and it weighs only 6 lbs.)

everyone pretty much got everything, but make sure your son goes to a army surplus store and buys himself a good pair of combat boots. trust me you wont get far in the mountains in regular hikeing boots. combat boots are warm and durable
