Just about anything. My two, when they were kittens, discovered the forest of hanging cat toys (known to those less sophisticated as a "closet") and found one toy they really liked. Now, you and I would have called it an Armani suit, but they accurately perceived that it was actually a jungle gym. The fact that I laughed when I saw what they did to it confirms my status as a hopeless cat guy.

My housemate's cat seem to really like bright color balls. She would actually fetch the ball, and sometimes navigate it around the apartment

Pretty much anything that moves. But kittens will eat/chew on lots of stuff so make sure the things the little one finds to play with is safe for him/her. . Strings with things attached to it. Hang it from something so it swings and the kitten will "bat at it" with its paw. They make things for cats to climb up on top of and scratch on and there is even a place for the cat to sleep or hide. Some even have toys attached to them. Go shopping and have fun with it. Or some homemade toys are just as fun!!! OH AND CATNIP! My cats have always liked that stuff. I would spread some on their scratching post or onto a favorite toys and they go crazy. Don't need much, just a pinch will do the trick! +5

Anything with a human attached to the other end.

a shoe lace tied to a stick. the flashlight beam running around the floor, cats go crazy trying to catch it. a dangling belt.

I use remote controlled cars with stuffed animals attached. This is an effective way of wearing them out so they sleep instead of bugging me for food and to play.

My cat loves to play with empty toilet paper rolls, screwed up pieces of newspaper and balls made of aluminium foil. I bought her a toy mouse once but she was not interested in it!!

Often the pet stores have little furry toy mice for a dollar or two. http://www.arcatapet.com/fullsize/1088.jpg Cats lose them easily since they roll under furniture. Tie on a length of string before giving it to the cat, for easy finding and retrieval.
