look at the one party systems of government around the world and tell me if you'd rather live like that. russia china cuba venezuela etc... our system of government has it's flaws, and is currently under-performing, but the single-party system has historically led to tyranny and repression. God bless America, warts and all!

I'd rather have two crappy parties fighting for the spotlight all the time than one all powerful party running the show.

It would rapidly become a totalitarian state. Oh yes things would run much more smoothly. But such isn't in our best interests. There'd be a rebellion in short order, followed by massive death due to a vicious crackdown. All the while, those in power would be reaping the rewards of being in power.

Smoothly down the road to hell. Questioning is central to any organisations: if dissent is not allowed, mistakes are not corrected. The problem in the US is not too many parties but too few. With two parties it is too easy to get locked into mindless oppositions: the other party are inherently evil, and anything they propose is bad, so we will oppose it and proposed the opposite. With five or six parties, which know they still sometimes have to work together, you cannot fall into such mindless bad-mouthing: you have to oppose in a much more principled manner.
