It's not so much when, as what. Some music just must be played loudly. For example, I generally play classical music very loudly -- partly because I want to hear the very lows well.

Yes, sometimes when I'm a little depressed, I listen to loud upbeat music and would try to be happy.

Often. Music isn't meant to be heard; it's meant to be FELT! Some songs will hit you right in the heart regardless of volume, but there are some that are pointless unless the bass shakes the walls (or the car). My tastes run towards either percussive and/or fast. The Overture of 1812 means nothing if the cannons sound like firecrackers, Techno is pointless without a subwoofer, and Slayer means nothing if they are not SCREAMING AT THE TOP OF THEIR LUNGS!!! THE SPORT IS WAR, TOTAL WAR WHERE VICTORY IS MASSACRE IN THE FINAL SWING, IT'S NOT A DRILL IT'S HOW MANY PEOPLE I CAN KILLLL!!!! Tell me that has the same impact at library volumes and I will call you a liar. CRANK IT ON A 1000W 5.1 SYSTEM WITH A HONKING SUBWOOFER THAN RATTLES THE WINDOWS WITH EVERY BEAT!!!
