Generally in the context of evolution, it means "able to pass along DNA to the next generation".

If you can eat it or it can eat you.

If it eats (absorbs nutrients), passes residue (poops) and moves (i.e. plants grow & follow the sun) - it's technically alive.

I would define something as being alive if it is able to reproduce, in the nonevent of sterility or castration. I know this includes bacterial viruses, which are both technically alive and the opposite. But there really is no watertight definition.
