The lasers are tuned so that photons are absorbed by the atoms only when they are moving toward the laser at a velocity above some minimum. This velocity creates a slight blue shift of the laser light, and those atoms which absorb the photons are slowed down. As they slow down below the minimum, they stop absorbing photons because the doppler shift takes the frequency out of the range where it can be absorbed. Using 6 lasers, you can trap atoms in the x,y, and z axis.
