How difficult is it to detect that someone has a hearing problem?

There is a cashier at my favorite grocery store and I realized on my second visit that she wore a hearing aid. I guess what gave it away for me was that she would stare at me through the entire checkout process. Cashiers just don`t do that now a days! Also her voice was very nasal.

Without a trip to the Dr's, not easy. A problem is that you may think they've got a hearing problem but they could just be ignoring you, or displaying selective hearing if they're male :) You could try sneaking up on them & see if they hear you.

say something spontaneously random and funny. if the person starts laughing, they can hear fine. if they look at you in a "wtf?" way, either they can't hear properly or they have no sense of humor
