  • It is not nearly as common as on the east coast. The west coast has colder water and hurricanes need warm water or they can't exist. The hurricanes of the east coast are fed by the Gulf Stream while the water on the west coast is fed by upwelling which brings cold, nutrient-rich water from the depths.
  • the west coast gets tropical storms that come from the south. the ocean is too deep to provide enough warm water for hurricanes to get going.
