I've personally known somebody who's got money willingly off someone online who beleived him to be female, Is it illegal to pose as a female online?

It is not illegal to pose as a female online. It might however be illegal to get money off someone fraudulently.

- 'fraudulently' as i mentioned the person was actually willing to do it, its not like my friend hacked his bank account or anything, discussions were taken place over time and the money was sent via one of the internet money transfering systems such as paypal etc.

- If your friend got the money fraudulently it's still illegal. It depends whether the other person paid the money in response to any false claims made by your friend.

  Here are some other examples: Suppose that someone falsely claimed to be suffering from cancer and gets money from a charity based on that lie. That is fraud, and is a crime. Same if you lie to an insurance company to get a big payoff. It's a rather serious crime in fact, which can result in lengthy prison terms.

I believe that law on the internet is a bit tricky. It is not illegal to pose as a female online. However observations tell me that it is illegal to pose as a female online for fraudulent or criminal reasons.

Your friend appears, however willingly the money was handed over, to be doing it for fraudulent reasons.

Note - I am not a lawyer, so this is speculation, but this reminds me of other similar cases in which a person was commiting a crime.

- Please don't be too brief, I'm actually somewhat worried for the person whose a friend of mine. I do stress the 'willingly' part, the person who he was posing to willingly gave him the money under the impression he was female. (not huge amounts I'm talking about)

- Yes this is illegal. If the other party took your friend through the judgment system he would be tried under fraud.

- though he never actually pretended to be anybody that actually exists, it must have like you said been a random picture he got yeah, but he didn't pretend to be 'that person' rather just made up a personality etc to pose as female, so it is actually a definate illegial thing to have done?
