I find things with a lasting value more appealing. Of late things with a transient attraction are competing for our attention. Old wisdom must be used to judge and ascertain the true value of the newer things to improve upon the human nature we were born with. Anything found suspicious of possessing a potential to degrade us must be rejected as useless and discarded. Generally things that produce transient sensual satisfaction must be discarded and those that could produce an improvement on the intellect must be accepted for their intrinsic value. Therefore my answer to your question would be - look for true intrinsic value rather than the superficial in all things that appeal to us, as the basis of deciding whether to accept or reject.
