There have been movies based on Asimov's writings before, but to the best of my knowledge, none of them were based on his Foundation series. Does anyone know if they ever plan on making one?

The Foundations series has been opted by many different studios over the years. Currently Unique Features has the option for "Foundation" and is in development with Warner Bros to produce the movie. Now that that is said... I'm not holding my breath, because there's been no further announcements about writers/directors/cast since the original press release. Hope this helps.

Generally, a film has to cut the action of a book down quite a lot to fit into the available time. With something of the scope of the Foundation series that would be even more true. So, while they may make a film called Foundation, I would not expect it to be anything a true fan would recognise. A proper filming would require at least a trilogy of films (Lord of the Ring style) and probably more - and I just don't see Hollywood buying into that.
