There are several sources from which you can buy films: Order them through your local video rental outlet. Many rental outlets will special order items. A smaller, independent video store that specializes in a wide range of films is your best bet. Many record stores stock films and will place orders for you. I would not advise going to Blockbuster, in particular, or other large, mainstream companies. Blockbuster, at least in the US, is known for demanding personalized edits of commercial films, because of a policy that films they rent should be watchable by almost all ages. This can result in a film being rendered incomprehensible to the viewer. Some movies are only available in 'Blockbuster' versions, unfortunately. Wal-Mart implements similar restrictions by refusing to handle many films. A number of on-line sellers now exist, but having had trouble with one in the past, I am leery about trying out new ones in the vast internet unknown. There is one I use fairly regularly - a local business with an internet presence. The large chain stores, such as HMV, and large film distributors, such as Warner, also sell product on-line, but you may not find what you are looking for from them. You may be able to order a movie directly from the production company that markets it. Many smaller labels operate websites where you can purchase their products. Really obscure films may be available directly from the director or producer. I would also check out films in the Criterion Collection, an independent company that produces very high quality DVDs of a wide range of films. Criterion is pricey, but they are the only source for many art films (e.g., Akira Kurosawa, Fritz Lang). I have used all of these sources to purchase films, and particularly music. For example, I go into very few brick & mortar music / video outlets, except for independents. I order more than half of my music directly from the performers or smaller record labels. Not only is this more convenient, it is usually cheaper than ordering them through a store. The other poster mentioned eBay, but to be honest, I have never found anything of interest there. Perhaps I have been too specific in what I am looking for.
